One in 3 who qualified for JEE Advanced 2020 opt out of IIT race – Times of India

MUMBAI: One in three students who qualified to appear for JEE (Advanced) have opted out of admissions to premier IITs. Of 2.5 lakh students who qualified in JEE (Main), only 1.6 lakh students registered for the next level exam scheduled on September 27.

While it is not unusual for students to drop out of the IIT race despite qualifying, few thousands would have opted out this year due to Covid-19 pandemic, an IIT director said, adding that many use JEE (M) ranks to seek admissions in NITs closer home in their preferred programmes.

Last year, 1.7 lakh students registered for JEE (A). A year before that 1.6 lakh students had registered from a pool of 2.3 lakh qualified candidates.

This year, due to Covid, exams will be conducted in 222 cities, instead of 164. To follow social distancing norms, exam centres have been almost doubled in the country from 600 to 1,150. IIT-Delhi is the organising IIT of JEE (A) 2020.
