Protests at UN HQ over police apathy in Hathras | India News – Times of India

Placards of Dalit Lives Matter and Justice For Hathras were held high at a protest in New York’s Times Square and UN headquarters on October 4 by NRI Ambedkarites under the banner of Ambedkar International Mission.
Demanding “removal of barricades around the home of the victim’s family to restore their freedom”, a statement issued sought that Centre and UP governments “investigate and punish” the “administration brass trying to protect the accused” and “strict action against all police officers”.
Appealing for support from the UNHRC, the protesters raised slogans against government apathy and “police’s abrogation of duty following the physical assault, alleged gangrape, death and burning of the remains of a 19-year-old in UP’s Hathras”.

Petitions are also being submitted to the UN and Amnesty International demanding intervention in “caste-based violence and atrocities” in India. In its set of demands, the protesters sought fast-track courts for Dalit atrocity cases and that the accused be tried without “special interests and influence”. Protests were also held in Michigan and Philadelphia.
